eating an alkaline diet

since i've been talking about food blogs lately, i wanted to be sure an introduce you to one more gem- the alkaline sisters. if you're new to an alkaline diet, it's basically one step up from being vegan. in a nutshell, it focuses on whole foods that are alkaline and avoids foods that are acidic. why, you ask? well, a whole host of diseases including cancer, coronary disease, diabetes and strokes cannot thrive in an alkaline environment (it is literally impossible for cancer to survive in an alkaline environment). they need acid to survive, so by avoiding acidic foods you're nearly eliminating the risk for these diseases. you can hop on over to the alkaline sister's article why alkaline and not just vegan or vegetarian? to learn more.

though i don't eat an entirely alkaline diet, david and i do try to eat as much alkaline as possible. i first really got interested in it after reading thrive, where the author really brings the subject to light and helps it make perfect sense. to me, if these foods are greatly contributing to our risk for serious diseases, and we have the ability to avoid them, then why are we eating them? surely, the momentary satisfaction isn't worth giving up years of our lives. right?

here's a little list of some alkaline foods vs. acidic foods.

alkaline foods:

vegetables: asparagus, beets, bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery, chicory, cucumbers, dill, green beans, leeks, leafy greens, onion, parsley, parsnips, peas, sea vegetables, all sprouts, squash, sweet potatoes, zucchini (and more)

pseudograins: amaranth, buckwheat, millet, quinoa, wild rice

fruit: grapefruit, lemons, limes, mangos, melons, apples, avocados, bananas, cantaloupe, cherries, dates, figs, oranges, peaches, pears, pineapple, pomegranate (and more) *acid fruits turn highly alkaline once digested

oils and nuts: flax seeds, hemp, pumpkin seed, almonds, coconut, macadamia, walnuts

acidic foods:

grains: commercial breakfast cereals, pasta, refined wheat flour, white rice

meat: cold water fish, venison, wild game, beef, pork, poultry, shellfish

dairy: milk, butter, cheese, cream

other: white sugar, artificial sweeteners, candy, coffee, margarine, soft drinks, prescription drugs, whey protein isolate.

when you think about the typical north american diet, it's easy to see why disease and poor health is so prevalent. everything a typical american eats from pizza to burgers is highly acidic. not all foods you eat have to be highly alkaline-forming, but for optimal health it really is important that most of them are alkalizing.

  • Foods that are rich in alkaline like fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of heart attack, thus it is important to add berries and even dark chocolate in our daily diet plan.

  • When I read this story I realized just how similar it was to my condition. I constantly experienced exhaustion, headaches and frequent colds and flu because I had high acid levels in my body.

    Even when I began to take medications for these illnesses, the symptoms were only masked, and they still continued to affect my health as I was not attacking them from their roots. No matter what medications I took…pills, anti-inflammatory and the like…my body only became more acidic because of these medications.

    To get to the roots of these health problems, the body’s pH level must be brought back to normal. There are alkaline foods that can help replenish the depleted alkaline levels in the body while neutralizing excess amounts of acid. Through an alkaline diet, sufficient amounts of alkaline are re-introduced into the body, thus bringing back the pH level to predominantly alkaline.
