design challenge winner + 8 honorable mentions!

design challenge

hello, hello! if you've been following along with design surface patterns from scratch design challenge, you know today is when the winner is revealed! this was such a hard decision. i have been blown away by everyone's entries and hard work. seeing so many budding surface pattern designers warms my heart and makes me so excited. i have loved so much seeing everyone's design process- from conception to sketches to illustrations to patterns. though for this competition i had to pick one winner, know that you have each inspired me deeply and i can't wait to see what your future brings. you are all so talented!

without further ado... the winner is... meghann rader!

surface pattern design challenge (3)undergrowth by meghann rader was inspired by walks through the northern boreal forest, where twigs and shrubs cover the overgrown earth and the trail beneath our feet. i absolutely love the sophisticated and delicate feel to this collection. meghann's attention to detail really shows through in how refined the collection looks together as a whole. i love how her color palettes work together and she has done an excellent job in varying the scale, detail and contrast in the collection.

above is the main print, boreal. i love how the tonal print really lets the detail show through. you can see the sketches that started this print here.

this is a snapshot of meghann's collection mid-process. seeing the color palette options and layering the patterns together like this really gives a nice overview of the collection as a whole. you can see meghann's entire process on the student work page, and visit her website here. congratulations, meghann!

honorable mentions!

since there are so many amazing collections, i can't resist sharing of few of my other favorites. these eight surface pattern designers will win a set of 3 illustrated quotes from the class (8 x 10 art prints) and a year subscription to the roost tribe!
