I studied surface pattern design in art school before computers. At the time, the industry was centered on New York and San Francisco and I didn't want to live in a big city so I never pursued it as a career. I still had a dream of designing but never learned Adobe Illustrator. When I came across Bonnie Christine, I watched a couple of videos and discovered she is very good at breaking skills down into small manageable steps.
When my aging parents fell ill, I discovered I needed time and location independence to have the freedom to help with caretaking. I needed to reinvent my professional life. When I was looking for instruction, it happened to be when Immersion was launching. At first, I was concerned when I saw messages about not needing to know how to draw or to be an artist. I dug into the testimonials and found other older students who already had Textile degrees that found Immersion really helpful.
Once in Immersion, I learned Adobe Illustrator very quickly! Since then I have been able to design five collections I am starting to pitch for licensing while managing households on both coasts. I can see the possibility of more time and location independence in the future.
I am grateful to Bonnie and her community for their support and for showing me the possibility during a challenging time.
