I felt like I was really taking a big step at saying yes to a life as an artist. And it was. It seriously fast tracked my ability to work within Illustrator, and learning to use the pathfinder panel and the shape builder tool made a world of difference in the efficiency and accuracy of how I work in Illustrator. I even started taking it further by learning more about using gradients, overlays (which work with screen printing in cool ways) and using the pen tool (I feel I’ve mastered it!).
Before Immersion, I had a photography business before getting into surface design. After I taught myself Illustrator, I knew I wanted to get back to actual drawing (I was a studio art major in college) and loved it so much more than photography. But I couldn’t get over a hump in the self teaching and felt like I was moving like a sloth to learn to create the work that I wanted to create. Plus I had no idea what to do with what I created.
Since Immersion, I worked on creating and pulled together 2 pattern collections, many illustrations that I use in my shop for notebooks and art prints, and I created my first Holiday greeting card collection this year which I was proud to successfully sell through my store with great reviews.
Illustrator alone has so many ways of doing things, and with step by step instructions you really get to know the ins and outs but also more efficient ways of doing things in Illustrator. So you aren’t stumbling around trying to figure it out yourself, or finding yourself creating work in ways that could be done more efficiently.
This year I look forward to finalizing my portfolio along with a new collection in the beginning of the year and sending off the portfolio to art directors. I will also be creating a wholesale catalog and begin approaching local stores with my paper products.
